Scope and Content Pier, Dunoon, Argyll & Bute This view from the north-north-east, taken in the early 1990s, shows the signalling tower, part of the 1896-8 rebuilding, as modified in 1937, after the removal in 1980-1 of the balcony. The circular openings were used for signalling to approaching steamers which berth, if any, they should use. By the late 1970s the popularity of excursions to Dunoon had waned, and the south steamer berth at Dunoon was little used. The pier was however, repaired in 1980-1 by Strathclyde Regional Council, in the process losing the 1937 promenade deck, to give the appearance seen here. Dunoon is on the east coast of the Cowal peninsula, and owed its growth in the 19th century to the development of Clyde steamer services. Until the 1960s it was a very popular holiday resort. Its steamer pier was rebuilt several times, most substantially in 1896-8. A promenade balcony was added in 1937. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
