Scope and Content Ship approaching Pier, Dunoon, Argyll & Bute This view from the north-east, taken in June 1972, shows the MV 'Maid of Skelmorlie' approaching Dunoon Pier on a service from Craigendoran Pier, near Helensburgh. This vessel was one of four sister ships introduced in 1953. At the pier is a sister ship. The ship leaving is the 'Queen Mary II'. In 1972 this pier was fitted with a side-loading ramp for handling cars. Two of the 'Maids' were converted to side-loading ferries for the Gourock-Dunoon service, including the one seen here at the pier. In 1974 they were replaced by the 'Jupiter' and 'Juno', purpose-built vessels, which are still on this service. Dunoon is on the east coast of the Cowal peninsula, and owed its growth in the 19th century to the development of Clyde steamer services. Until the 1960s it was a very popular holiday resort. Its steamer pier was rebuilt several times, most substantially in 1896-8. A promenade balcony was added in 1937. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
