Scope and Content Excursion steamer at pier, Hall Street, Campbeltown, Argyll & Bute This view from the north-west, taken in July 1971, shows the excursion steamer 'Queen Mary II' at the head of the pier, after arrival from Gourock. This vessel was built in 1934, as a high-speed ship for just such long-distance excursions. She was renamed when the Atlantic liner 'Queen Mary' entered service in 1936. The north side of this pier acted as a quay for fishing boats. For many years Campbeltown had an important herring fishing industry, and the quay was used in season for curing herring. Steamer excursions ended in the early 1970s. The 'Queen Mary II' is now a restaurant ship on the Thames in London. Campbeltown has a fine east-facing natural harbour, at the south end of the Kintyre peninsula, protected from easterly gales by Davaar Island. Steamer services to the town began in 1815, and for many years it relied on steamships for much of its trade. A large pier was built for steamers and fishing boats.
