Scope and Content Aberdeen-Inverness train at Elgin Station, Moray This view, taken from the west-south-west in about 1986, shows an Aberdeen-Inverness train entering the station, headed by a type 47 diesel-electric locomotive. The footbridge was probably installed in about 1890, and had survived the 1960s rebuilding, which had left the Inverness-bound platform with a 'bus shelter'. Steam engine-hauled trains on the Aberdeen-Inverness services were replaced by diesel multiple-unit trains in 1959, and these were in turn replaced by diesel-locomotive-hauled trains in about 1980, as seen here. Diesel railcars were brought back in the late 1980s. The first station in Elgin was opened in 1858 by the Inverness & Aberdeen Junction Railway, which ran from Nairn to Keith, where it made an end to end junction with the Great North of Scotland Railway from Aberdeen. This station was rebuilt by British Railways in the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
