Scope and Content View of gravestone of Jean Ramsay, St Fergus's Church and Burial Ground, Glamis, Angus This shows the gravestone with its large winged soul with a halo (top), an emblem of the spirit of ascending to Heaven (indicated by two stars). Two large Corinthian pilasters flank a heraldic shield surrounded by 'mantling' (leafy plumes) and surmounted by a helmet. At the base of the stone is a strange representation of a skull (symbol of death) shown in profile. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Jean Ramsay, who died in 1766. It is inscribed: 'ERECTED BY/DAVID LINDSAY MASON IN GLAMMIS/& JEAN RAMSAY HIS SPOUSE IN MEMORY/OF THEIR DAUGHTER JEAN WHO DIED/24th NOVEMBER 1766 AGED 22 YEARS'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
