Scope and Content Gravestone of Elizabeth Gibson, Arbroath Abbey Churchyard, Angus This shows the main face of the gravestone with its central incised winged soul. This symbolises the soul of the deceased person ascending to Heaven. The style of the carving is fluid and elegant, and resembles the swift lines of an ink drawing. The text below also seems to reproduce fine script. The style of the winged soul on this monument can be likened to those found on tombstones in New England, USA. The epitaph is intended to reflect the thoughts of a person visiting the graveyard, rather than the thoughts of the deceased. This gravestone commemorates Elizabeth Gibson, who died in 1751. It appears to be of slate, and features a long and beautiful epitaph: 'I pass with melancholy State/By all these solemn Heaps of fate/And think, as soft and sad I tread,/Above the venerable Dead/Time was, like me, they life possessed/And time shall be when I shall rest'.
