Scope and Content Gravestone of James Keill, Arbroath Abbey Churchyard, Angus This gravestone features a curved top with fluted border and central relief carving of a cannon on a wheeled gun carriage, which relates to the deceased's career as a gunner. The elegant style of the incised initials and date relates to engraved printed lettering of the period. Many Scottish gravestones of the 17th and 18th centuries feature trade emblems which relate to the deceased's occupation in life, as well as vivid emblems of death and resurrection. By the 19th century these had become less common, and imagery of flowers, doves, clasped hands and urns emerged as the most popular decoration for memorials. This gravestone commemorates James Keill, who died in 1816. It is inscribed: 'Erected by Elizabeth Cargill, 1817/in memory of her husband/James Keill, gunner who/died 30th March 1816 aged/83 years'. Wives retain their maiden names on many Scottish monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
