Scope and Content Gravestone of Caleb Niblo and Jean Niblo, Inch Old Parish Church and Burial Ground, Dumfries & Galloway This gravestone features a border of scrolled leafy volutes surrounding central motifs of a skull and crossed bones (emblematic of death), and a smiling winged soul (representing the soul of the deceased person ascending to Heaven). The leaves and flowers in the border also serve to illustrate ideas of regeneration and resurrection after death. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Caleb Niblo, a brick maker, who died in 1733, his daughter Jean Niblo, who died 1741, and his wife Janet Doak, died 1770 Wives retain their maiden names on many Scottish monuments. The stone is inscribed: 'Here lyes the Corpse of Caleb/Niblo Brick maker he Dyed March/11th 1733 Aged 63 years/Also Jean Niblo Daughter to John/Niblo and Janet Doke. She dyed Sept./1741 Aged 6 years. Also here lyes/the corps of Jannet Doak Spouse to John/Niblo who died Oct. 28 1770'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
