Scope and Content Train at Buchanan Street Station, Glasgow This shows the north-east end of the station from the east, in November 1962, with an Aberdeen-Glasgow train arriving. Behind the locomotive is the bridge carrying Dobbie's Loan over the station approach. The locomotive is of ex-London & North Eastern Railway class A2. The class A2 locomotives were originally built in the 1940s for hauling express passenger and goods trains. In the early 1960s a few of them worked on the Glasgow-Aberdeen service. Buchanan Street Station was closed in November 1966, and has been demolished. Railway offices were built on part of the site. This station was opened in 1849 by the Caledonian Railway, which had taken over the Glasgow, Garnkirk & Coatbridge Railway, which had initiated its construction. It was rebuilt in the 1930s by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
