Scope and Content Train at Buchanan Street Station, Glasgow This shows a Glasgow-Aberdeen train which has just left the station, passing the turntable to the north-east of the Dobbie's Loan Bridge. The locomotive is of ex-London & North Eastern Railway class A4, number 60009, 'Union of South Africa'. The class A4 locomotives were originally built in the 1930s for hauling high-speed trains on the East Coast Main Line. In the early 1960s a few were reconditioned to operate a three-hour Glasgow-Aberdeen service. Buchanan Street Station was closed in November 1966, and has been demolished. Railway offices were built on part of the site. This station was opened in 1849 by the Caledonian Railway, which had taken over the Glasgow, Garnkirk & Coatbridge Railway, which had initiated its construction. It was rebuilt in the 1930s by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
