Scope and Content Train at Buchanan Street Station, Glasgow This shows the north-east end of the station from the south, in the early 1960s, with an Aberdeen-Glasgow train arriving. Behind the locomotive is the signal box controlling train movements into and out of the station. The locomotive is of the ex-London & North Eastern Railway class V2. The class V2 locomotives were known as 'Green Arrows' after the first of the class. They were used on this service for a brief period at the ends of their lives. Buchanan Street Station was closed in November 1966, and has been demolished. Railway offices were built on part of the site. This station was opened in 1849 by the Caledonian Railway, which had taken over the Glasgow, Garnkirk & Coatbridge Railway, which had initiated its construction. It was rebuilt in the 1930s by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
