Scope and Content Thurso Railway Station, Highland This shows the station from the north, photographed in May 1974. The low wing to the right contains the waiting rooms and other offices, ranged along the single platform. The gable to the left is the end of the train shed, which has a wooden trussed roof. The Sutherland & Caithness Railway was the last link in a chain of railways linking Inverness to Thurso and Wick. The Far North Line, as the whole route is called, survived the rationalisation of British Railways in the 1960s, and is still well used. This station was opened in 1874 by the Sutherland & Caithness Railway. It was, and remains, the northernmost station in the British Isles. In view of the windiness of Caithness, the station, like that at Wick, was built with an overall roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
