Scope and Content Ballochmyle Viaduct, East Ayrshire This shows the viaduct from the north-east, with the central span, and two of the approach spans on the left. It spans the River Ayr, which has at this point cut a deep gorge through red sandstone. This rock provided firm support for the abutments of the viaduct, and also the material to construct it. Though nominally built as part of the Cumnock branch of the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway this viaduct was really constructed as part of an Anglo-Scottish route from Glasgow to Carlisle via Kilmarnock and Dumfries, which was completed in 1850. The line is now a secondary route. This viaduct was built between 1846 and 1848 for the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, to designs by John Miller, engineer. It has a central span of 55m, flanked on each side by three arches of 15.24m span. The central span is the largest masonry arch on a British railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
