Scope and Content Ayr Railway Station This shows a diesel multiple-unit train for Glasgow in one of the bay platforms on the west side of the station. This train is composed of units built in 1959 at Swindon Works, and designed specially for use on regular-interval Ayr-Glasgow services. These trains were withdrawn when the railway from Paisley to Ayr was electrified in 1987. At that time the station interior was remodelled, with glazed screens forming an enclosed concourse. One of the screens runs across the ends of the platforms in this view. The second Ayr station was opened on this site in 1856, to serve the Ayr & Maybole Railway and lines to Glasgow and Dalmellington, replacing the first station, on the north side of Ayr Harbour. The 1856 station was rebuilt in 1886, and incorporates a station hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
