Scope and Content Largo Parish Church, Upper Largo, Fife, from west This view from the west, taken in 1979, shows the church, which is apparently on an early Christian site. The tower and spire and east end are of 1628, and the west end (seen here) was built in 1816-17 to designs by Alexander Leslie. The offertory houses flanking the steps are early 19th century. The parishes of Largo and Newburn were united in 1965, and the Gothic Newburn was converted into a dwelling house. The pulpit from Newburn is now in the Largo church, the interior of which was remodelled in 1965 to designs by L A L Rolland. Largo is in two sections. The lower town, with a rivermouth harbour was the port for a farming community, and became a burgh of barony in 1513. Upper Largo seems to have grown up round the church which served both burgh and parish, and, from the late 18th century, along the coast road. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
