Scope and Content West Shore, St Monans, Fife, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the West Shore, with houses mainly of the 18th and 19th centuries, typical of the East Neuk of Fife vernacular. Beyond the couple on the right is the west basin of the harbour, which took its present form in the 19th century. St Monans, like the other East Neuk ports, became an important fishing centre in the mid-19th century, when its harbour was rebuilt. There were two boatbuilding yards in the town, Miller's, founded in 1747, and Walter Reekie's. The fishing industry abandoned the town after World War II. St Monans has been a place of some significance since at least the 14th century, when the present parish church was built and endowed by David II. It was probably primarily a port for the surrounding area, and coal mining and salt boiling were important local industries in the 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
