Scope and Content Royal & Ancient Club House, Golf Place, St Andrews, Fife, from east-south-east This view from the east-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the club house on the right, with part of the Old Course to its left. In the distance is the Old Course Hotel, built in 1967-8 to designs by Curtis & Davis of New York. The ground floor of the club house was built in 1853-4, and the upper floor was added in 1880-2. The Royal & Ancient first formulated the rules of golf, and remains one of the arbiters of the rules of the modern game. The club house overlooks the Old Course, which the club does not own: it is the property of the citizens of the town. Golf was played in St Andrews at least as early as the late 15th century. In 1754 the Society of St Andrews Golfers was formed, and this changed its name to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in 1853. The first phase of the present club house was completed in 1853-4, and designed by George Rae. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
