Scope and Content Old ferry terminal, Stornoway, Lewis, Western Isles, from north-west The old ferry terminal had a roll-on, roll-off ferry facility, but this was not in use when this photograph was taken in 1997. It had been used by Caledonian MacBrayne ferry services between Stornoway and Ullapool on the mainland, but by 1997 had been replaced by a new ferry terminal. To the left are the Art Deco ferry offices, which date to 1935, and which were being used by Caledonian MacBrayne in 1997. The building beyond the offices is the Old Fish Mart. In the background is a Greenpeace ship. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Stornoway is situated on the east coast of Lewis and is the only major town in the Western Isles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
