Scope and Content Nos 1-2 North Beach, Stornoway, Lewis, Western Isles, from north-north-east This harled warehouse, belonging to the Fishermen's Co-operative, dates to the early 19th century, and is likely to have been used for the drying and storing of nets. When it was first built, it had only five bays, but was extended to eight at a later date. In the earlier part of the three-storeyed building there is a forestair leading to a door on the first floor,. On the top floor there are bull's-eye windows, interspersed with hoist openings. To the left is a two-storeyed dwelling house which also dates to the 19th century. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Stornoway is situated on the east coast of Lewis and is the only major town in the Western Isles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
