Scope and Content Church, school and manse, St Kilda Village, Western Isles, from north-east The church, which is the part of the building with the arched doorway, dates to 1826 and was designed by Robert Stevenson (1772-1850) of the Northern Lighthouse Board. It was paid for with money raised by Dr John MacDonald, a evangelical minister from the Church of Scotland, who visited St Kilda three times during the 1820s. Attached to the church at the right is a schoolroom which was built around 1898-1900. There had been a teacher resident on the island since 1884, funded by the Ladies' Association of the Highland Society. By 1926 there were only eight pupils in the school. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
