Scope and Content High Street, Falkland, Fife, from east-south-east This view from the east-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the Town House, with its steeple, to the right, designed by Thomas Barclay and built in 1800-1. The steepled fountain in the middle of the street was built in 1856 to designs by Alexander Roos of London. In the left background is the gatehouse of Falkland Palace. The town of Falkland still has many older buildings, like these ones, and is remarkably unaltered. The palace is now managed by The National Trust for Scotland, and is a popular destination for visitors. There was a castle here by the early 14th century. It was confiscated by the Crown in 1437, and used as a royal residence. James IV started to build a place on the site of the castle in 1501, and James V continued to build until his death in 1542. The town grew up round the palace, which it still dominates. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
