Scope and Content Tenements, Brunton Street, Falkland, Fife, from north This view from the north, taken in 1979, shows two early tenements. On the right is the much restored early 18th-century Wester Brunton House, and on the left is Brunton House, which was restored in 1894-5 by Robert Weir Schultz, and again in 1970-1. The town of Falkland still has many older buildings, like these ones, and is remarkably unaltered. The palace is now managed by The National Trust for Scotland, and is a popular destination for visitors. There was a castle here by the early 14th century. It was confiscated by the Crown in 1437, and used as a royal residence. James IV started to build a place on the site of the castle in 1501, and James V continued to build until his death in 1542. The town grew up round the palace, which it still dominates. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
