Scope and Content Colinsburgh Parish Church, Main Street, Colinsburgh, Fife, from north-west This view shows the building from the north-west, and was taken in 1979. The church was constructed in 1843-4 by the Relief Church, a denomination which had broken away from the Established Church of Scotland in 1761. The mildly Tudor style is characteristic of the 1830s and 1840s. Colinsburgh was, until the coming of the railways, also a posting place for stagecoach services, with an inn, where horses could be changed. By the early 20th century it was primarily an estate village for the Balcarres estate of the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres. This is the church of the estate village of Colinsburgh, founded in 1682 by Colin, 3rd Earl of Balcarres. It became a burgh of barony in 1686, and continued to serve as a market town at least until the mid-19th century, when it had a weekly corn market. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
