Scope and Content Main Street, Colinsburgh, Fife, from east-south-east This view from the east-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the north side of the west end of Main Street. The houses to the left of the wooden electricity pole are probably 18th or early 19th century, and the ones to the right are later. The dark whinstone of these houses, with sandstone dressings, is typical of Colinsburgh. Colinsburgh was, until the coming of the railways, also a posting place for stagecoach services, with an inn, where horses could be changed. By the early 20th century it was primarily an estate village for the Balcarres estate of the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres. These houses are part of the estate village of Colinsburgh, founded in 1682 by Colin, 3rd Earl of Balcarres. It became a burgh of barony in 1686, and continued to serve as a market town at least until the mid-19th century, when it had a weekly corn market. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
