Description General view from NNW showing bridge, cottage and Masons Lodge in background

Date 1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 793529

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Ceres, Fife, from north-west This view from the north-west, taken in 1979, shows the end of a building once used as a brewery on the left, and on the right the Bishop's Bridge, a pack-horse bridge built in the 17th century. The two-storeyed building behind it is the former St John's Masonic Lodge, built in 1765. After the hand-loom weaving of linen was superseded by power-loom weaving in the middle of the 19th century, Ceres reverted to an agricultural village. It retains much of its character, and buildings from the 17th century onwards. Ceres village is the focal point for a rich agricultural area, and was created a burgh of barony in 1620. In the late 18th century it became a centre of the linen-weaving industry, and a bleachfield was established nearby to finish the cloth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
