Scope and Content Lauriston Castle, Cramond Road South, Edinburgh, from south-south-west This view from the south-south-west, taken in 1979, shows the 16th-century tower in the centre, with its unusual two-storeyed corner turrets. The tall roofs are by William Burn, who also designed the east and north wings seen in this view. The east wing contains an entrance hall and dining room. The house and its contents were given to the nation in 1926, and have been looked after since then by Edinburgh Corporation and its successors. In 1927 they built a curator's house to the east of the stable block, designed by the City Architect, E J MacRae. The core of this building is a T-plan tower-house, probably built in the 1590s for Sir Archibald Napier of Edenbellie & Merchiston. It was substantially extended in 1827 to designs by William Burn for Thomas Allan. Further small additions were made in 1845 (porches) and 1872 (library). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
