Scope and Content Nos 1-7 Moray Place, Edinburgh, from south This view from the south, taken in 1979, shows the north-east section of Moray Place, which has 12 sides. The central 'palace' block is a simplified version of the centrepiece on the north side of Charlotte Square. Note the original granite setts which form the road surface. The core of this development was completed to Graham's design by the late 1830s, and the edges were finished in the 1850s to designs by other architects. All the houses were originally terraced, but some have since been flatted. The area is now a mixture of houses and offices. Moray Place is part of the development of the estate of the 10th Earl of Moray, acquired in 1782 by his father. The development was designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1822, with a crescent, an oval and a circus (Moray Place) on its main axis. The site is on the edge of the valley of the Water of Leith.
