Scope and Content Duddingston House, Milton Road West, Edinburgh, from east This view from the east, taken in 1979, shows the main body of the house, with its Corinthian portico. The service court is on the right. The blue paint was probably applied in the 1960s, when there was a vogue for painting masonry to 'brighten it up'. The curious layout of this house, with the main block containing only the principal apartments, may be accounted for by the fact that the client was a bachelor. The house was an hotel in 1979 and is now private residences. Its interiors are unusually well-preserved. This house was built in 1763-8 to designs by William Chambers for the 8th Earl of Abercorn. The main body of the house is linked to a court of offices, incorporating the kitchens and stables. The house is set in grounds, laid out in 1768, which are now a golf course.
