Scope and Content Nos 1-11 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1979, shows the north side of the square. The house in the centre of the terrace, No 5, was built before 1796. It was given an elaborate interior in about 1905 by the 4th Marquess of Bute, and it was later given to the nation as the official residence of the Secretary of State for Scotland (now the First Minister of the Scottish Parliament). The use of the square as private housing ended as Edinburgh became more of a legal and financial centre, and most of the houses were adapted as offices in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the early 1990s several of the houses were empty, but more recently several have been reconditioned. Charlotte Square was part of the original New Town of Edinburgh as planned in 1766 by James Craig. The construction of houses round the square did not, however, begin until 1792. The design of the front elevations had been prepared in 1791 by Robert Adam, who died before construction began. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
