Scope and Content Hamilton House, Prestonpans, East Lothian, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1979, shows the south and east sides of the house. The steep-pitched roofs are typical of early 17th-century buildings in Scotland, and may originally have been covered in pantiles. The house is on a U-plan, with the courtyard on the west side. This house was in a ruinous condition in the early 1930s, and was taken over by The National Trust for Scotland as one of its first properties. It is now a private residence. Prestonpans village is a relic of what must have been an important place in the 17th century, judging by the size and quality of its market cross, and by the sophistication of the surviving large houses, of which Hamilton House, built in 1626 by John Hamilton, is the most advanced.
