Scope and Content Mugdock Reservoir (Glasgow Corporation Water Works), Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, from south This view from the south, taken in 1979, shows the gauge basins of the Mugdock Reservoir, where the volume of water entering the reservoir from the aqueduct is measured. Any silt in the water is allowed to settle in the basins in the foreground before the water enters the main body of the reservoir. The Loch Katrine scheme was a pioneer of its kind, and has continued to satisfy most of its original intention. There are, however, current plans to build a modern water treatment plant to meet European Union standards for water quality. The first phase of the Loch Katrine scheme for supplying Glasgow with water was constructed in 1855-9, with an aqueduct, mainly in tunnel, connecting the loch with a service reservoir at Mugdock. In 1886-96 the capacity of the scheme was doubled, and a second service reservoir built at Craigmaddie. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
