Scope and Content Ross Priory, West Dunbartonshire, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1979, shows the entrance front of the house, with its crocketed finials and Gothic windows rather uneasily applied to a building whose plan is essentially Classically symmetrical. Loch Lomond is in the mist on the right. The first house on this site was built in the 14th century for the Buchanans of Ross, and was rebuilt in 1695. The core of the 1695 house is the rear of the present building. Since the 1970s the house has been owned by the University of Strathclyde and used for staff recreation, and for reading parties. This house was extensively remodelled in 1810-16 at a time when medieval religion was very fashionable. There was no religious connection with the site, but the design has features associated with medieval church architecture. The architect, James Gillespie Graham, was a noted designer of churches.
