General view from E showing M8 passing through Townhead following redevelopment

SC 791510

Description General view from E showing M8 passing through Townhead following redevelopment

Date 1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 791510

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content M8 urban motorway, Townhead, Glasgow, from east This view from the east, taken in 1979, shows the M8, at this point built on the bed of the Monkland Canal, from a footbridge at Townmill Road. On the left is Glasgow Cathedral, and to its right the old and new Royal Infirmary buildings. Construction of the latter began in 1971, but was not completed until 1982. Note the light traffic. Since 1979 the levels of traffic on this route have increased dramatically. There are current plans to build the south flank of the ring road as an extension of the M74. This section of road was built as part of the M8 urban motorway round the north and west sides of the city centre, opened in 1970. As originally intended, there would have been east and south flanks, forming a ring round the city centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
