Description General view from S

Date 1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 791492

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content M8 urban motorway, Charing Cross, Glasgow, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the M8 curving, in cutting, towards the east, with, in the centre, a slip road from Woodlands Road. The tall flats on the left are in Cedar Street, off Garscube Road. The terraces on the right were truncated when the road was built. Note the light traffic. Since 1979 the levels of traffic on this route have increased dramatically. There are current plans to build the south flank of the ring road as an extension of the M74. This section of road was built as part of the M8 urban motorway round the north and west sides of the city centre, opened in 1970. As originally intended, there would have been east and south flanks, forming a ring round the city centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
