Scope and Content M8 urban motorway, Charing Cross Interchange, Glasgow, from north This view from the north, taken in 1979, shows the road from Charing Cross, with the bridge carrying the Bath Street-Berkeley Street link in the middle distance. Beyond that bridge the road begins to rise to cross the Kingston Bridge. The offices on the left were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Note the light traffic. Since 1979 the levels of traffic on this route have increased dramatically. There are current plans to build the south flank of the ring road as an extension of the M74. This section of road was built as part of the M8 urban motorway round the north and west sides of the city centre, opened in 1970. As originally intended, there would have been east and south flanks, forming a ring round the city centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
