Scope and Content Kingston Bridge, Glasgow, from west This view from the west, taken in 1979, shows the central and side spans of the bridge. In the background is the General Terminus Iron Ore Terminal, with two of the bulk carriers which brought ore to the terminal. On the right is the Broomielaw Quay, adapted as part of the Clyde Walkway. The main spans of the Kingston Bridge were constructed as balanced cantilevers to avoid obstructing the river. The bridge is now carrying heavier traffic than was originally envisaged. A major programme of maintenance has been in progress since the late 1990s. This bridge was built as part of the M8 urban motorway round the north and west sides of the city centre. It is in fact two pre-stressed reinforced concrete boxes, side by side. It was designed by WA Fairhurst & Partners, and opened in 1970. There are long approach viaducts on both sides. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
