Scope and Content Maryhill Locks, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow This view from the north-west, taken in 1979, shows the top lock at Maryhill, looking along the start of the summit level of the canal, which runs east to Wyndford Lock, near Banknock. The lock gates were cut down in the 1960s after the canal was closed, to reduce maintenance costs. This flight of five locks is at the western end of the summit level of the Forth & Clyde Canal. This was the first sea-to-sea ship canal in the world. It was closed to navigation in 1962, and split up by blockages. It was reopened in 2000 as part of the Millennium Link project. The Forth & Clyde Canal was built between 1768 and 1790 to take sea-going vessels across central Scotland, avoiding the long and hazardous voyage round the north of Scotland. The section from Maryhill to Bowling was built between 1786 and 1790, and designed by Robert Whitworth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
