Scope and Content Oakfield Swing Bridge, Crinan Canal, Argyll & Bute, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979 shows the Oakfield Swing Bridge, on the outskirts of Lochgilphead. This was built in 1871 by P & W MacLellan of Glasgow to replace an earlier bridge. It gives access to a private house in the woods in the background. The bridge is hand-operated. A quay to the left in this view was used to serve the trade of Lochgilphead. The canal was extensively used by 'puffers' carrying coal and whisky until the 1960s. It is now used intensively by yachtsmen. After years of 'put-past' maintenance it was thoroughly overhauled during the winter of 2002-3. The Crinan Canal was built between 1794 and 1809 to designs by John Rennie, engineer, for use by sailing vessels engaged in trade between the Firth of Clyde and the western Highlands and Islands. It saved the risky voyage round the Mull of Kintyre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
