Scope and Content Crinan Basin, Crinan Canal, Argyll & Bute, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the west side of the basin with the preserved puffers 'Auld Reekie' and 'VIC32'. Both were built during the war for the Admiralty as Victualling Inshore Craft (VICs). Both had, by 1979, been converted to carry passengers, and are seen laid up for the winter. The canal was extensively used by 'puffers' carrying coal and whisky until the 1960s. It is now used intensively by yachtsmen. After years of 'put-past' maintenance it was thoroughly overhauled during the winter of 2002-03. The 'VIC32' is still based at Crinan and cruises during the summer months. The Crinan Canal was built between 1794 and 1809 to designs by John Rennie, engineer, for use by sailing vessels engaged in trade between the Firth of Clyde and the western Highlands and Islands. It saved the risky voyage round the Mull of Kintyre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
