Scope and Content Crinan Basin, Crinan Canal, Argyll & Bute, from south This view from the south, taken in 1979, shows Crinan Basin, at the north-west end of the canal, with the entrance lock to the left. This is a lock built in the 1920s to allow vessels to shelter in the basin which were larger than could pass through the rest of the canal. The original lock, now blocked off, is in front of the lighthouse. The canal was extensively used by 'puffers' carrying coal and whisky until the 1960s. On the right in this view are two preserved puffers, 'Auld Reekie' (left) and 'VIC 32'. It is now used intensively by yachtsmen. After years of 'put-past' maintenance it was thoroughly overhauled during the winter of 2002-3. The Crinan Canal was built between 1794 and 1809 to designs by John Rennie, engineer, for use by sailing vessels engaged in trade between the Firth of Clyde and the western Highlands and Islands. It saved the risky voyage round the Mull of Kintyre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
