Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 791252

Scope and Content Part of the Crinan Canal, Cairnbaan, Argyll & Bute, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the central section of the canal running in front of the white-painted houses in the middle distance. Towards the right are the Cairnbaan locks, which raise west-bound vessels to the summit level, which runs to Dunardry, a short distance out of sight to the left. The white-painted houses in this view were built to house canal workers. The canal was extensively used by 'puffers' carrying coal and whisky until the 1960s. It is now used intensively by yachtsmen. After years of 'put-past' maintenance it was thoroughly overhauled during the winter of 2002-3. The Crinan Canal was built between 1794 and 1809 to designs by John Rennie, engineer, for use by sailing vessels engaged in trade between the Firth of Clyde and the western Highlands and Islands. It saved the risky voyage round the Mull of Kintyre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
