Scope and Content Railway Quay, Oban, Argyll & Bute, from east-south-east This view from the east-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the east end of the Railway Quay being used as a base for inshore fishing vessels, as it had been for many years. When first constructed this part of the pier was used by small cargo vessels, and in the 1940s and 1950s by the ferry serving the island off Lismore. The replacement of conventional vessels by car ferries on West Highland services began in the early 1960s. Since then the vehicle traffic has increased dramatically, and the size of vessels has increased accordingly. The ferry berths are at the west end of the pier, and the east end is used by small craft. The Railway Quay was opened in 1880 by the Callander & Oban Railway next to its station, to allow direct interchange of passengers between rail and steamer. In the mid-1960s the pier was adapted to handle car ferries to Mull, Coll, Colonsay and Tiree. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
