Scope and Content Ferry approaching Railway Quay, Oban, Argyll & Bute, from south This view from the south, taken in 1979, shows the MV 'Caledonia', on the car ferry service between Oban and Craignure, Mull. This vessel was placed on this service in 1976, having served since 1970 on the Ardrossan - Brodick service. She was built in 1966 as the 'Stena Baltica'. The replacement of conventional vessels by car ferries on West Highland services began in the early 1960s. Since then the vehicle traffic has increased dramatically, and the size of vessels has increased accordingly. The 'Caledonia' was replaced by the 'Isle of Mull' in 1988, and sold out of service. The Railway Quay was opened in 1880 by the Callander & Oban Railway next to its station, to allow direct interchange of passengers between rail and steamer. In the mid-1960s the pier was adapted to handle car ferries to Mull, Coll, Colonsay and Tiree. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
