Scope and Content Ferry at North Pier, Oban, Argyll & Bute, from south-south-west This view from the south-south-west, taken in 1979, shows the pier from the Railway Quay, with a car ferry, probably MV 'Columba'. This vessel was one of three sister ships introduced in 1964. She is moored at the North Pier overnight. To the right of the ship is the pier building, dated 1927. The excursion services from Oban to Iona and Staffa, latterly operated by the turbine steamer 'King George V', ended with the withdrawal of that vessel in 1974. Since then the pier has been used by a variety of vessels, mainly for overnight mooring, though a small amount of freight has been handled. There was a pier on this site in the 19th century, serving steamers and fishing boats, and it was the town's premier pier until 1880, when the Railway Quay was opened. The North Pier was rebuilt in the mid-1920s to serve the excursion services operated by David Macbrayne Ltd, with a large waiting room block. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
