Scope and Content Central Station, Gordon Street, Glasgow, from south-south-east This view from the south-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the train indicator installed as part of the 1899-1906 rebuilding. At the upper level each platform has a glazed screen, with the time of the train at the top, and a list of destinations below. These are placed manually. The extension and remodelling of Central Station created one of Britain's finest terminals. This train indicator was very effective, but required several men to change the screens. It was therefore replaced in about 1980 by a mechanised one, and the old one converted into a restaurant. The first railway station on this site was opened in 1879 by the Caledonian Railway, primarily to handle its Anglo-Scottish services. An extension to the east, and a major new bridge over the River Clyde, were built between 1899 and 1906, allowing Bridge Street Station, rebuilt in 1890, to be closed.
