Scope and Content Train arriving at Buchanan Street Station, Glasgow, from west This view from the west, taken in 1966, shows a train from Aberdeen to Glasgow arriving at Buchanan Street. The train is headed by a class A2/3 4-6-2 mixed traffic locomotive named 'Owen Tudor', and is composed of the first type of British Railways main line coaches, introduced in 1951. Buchanan Street Station, and the associated goods station, were both victims of the rationalisation of British Railways in the mid-1960s. The passenger services handled here were transferred to Queen Street Station, and the site was cleared, and has been redeveloped. The first railway station on this site was opened in 1849 by the Caledonian Railway, though it was originally projected by the Glasgow, Garnkirk & Coatbridge Railway, as an extension of its line to Glebe Street, to the east. This was the terminus for Anglo-Scottish services until Central Station opened in 1879. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
