Scope and Content Waverley Station, Edinburgh, from north-east This view from the north-east, taken in 1979, shows the east end of the station from the Calton Hill. The height of the 'ridge and furrow' roof was limited by Act of Parliament. On the left is the goods yard, which was busy until the mid-1960s. The east-bound platforms served trains to London, as seen here, to Carlisle via the Waverley Route, and to a range of outer suburban destinations to the south and east. The only one of the latter surviving in 1979 was that to North Berwick. The London and North Berwick lines were electrified in the 1980s. The first railway station on this site was opened in 1846, by the North British Railway (coming in from the east) and the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway (from the west). When the two companies were amalgamated in 1865 the station was largely rebuilt, and it was again rebuilt in 1895-1902 to its present layout. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
