Scope and Content Gravestone of John Shaw, Barr Old Parish Church, South Ayrshire This gravestone is covered with complex carved ornament. At the top is a winged hourglass, emblematic of time, literally, 'flying'. On either side of this are bizarre hybrid creatures, with female faces, claws and curled tails, attacking winged fauns below. In the centre of the stone is the figure of John Shaw on horseback, a skull and crossed bones just behind his head as reminders of his early death. The mythical creatures which dominate the decoration of this stone may have been taken from engraved bookplates of the period, which often featured elaborate figures like these in their borders. This gravestone commemorates John Shaw, who died in 1731. It is inscribed: 'A PLEASANT YOUTH/JOHN SHAW BY NAME/WITHIN THIS GRAVE DOTH LY/SET NOT YOUR HEART/ON OUGHT THEN HERE/FOR ALL IS VANITIE/HE DIED DECR 23/1731 AGED 28'.
