Scope and Content Detail of gravestone of Hendry Fairlie, Monikie Parish Church and Burial Ground, Monikie, Angus This shows the top of the gravestone, with its intricately-carved patterned border and central panel inscribed with initials and a flaming heart (symbolising the fire of Divine Love). Flanking the panel are the figures of a gentleman in a long coat and wig, holding hands with his son (left), and a lady in bonnet and pleated skirts with her daughter (right). The lower part of the stone features a heraldic crest surmounted by a unicorn. A winged soul, emblem of the spirit ascending to Heaven, hovers overhead. Hendry Fairlie helped the Earl of Panbride, his master, to escape during the 1715 Jacobite rising. Being the servant of a prominent figure was seen to be a fact worth recording on this gravestone. Servants often had a hierarchy system just as complicated as that of their masters, and the personal servant of a member of the aristocracy would be highly regarded in their community. This gravestone commemorates Hendry Fairlie, who died in 1757, and Elizabeth Ramsay, who died in 1755. It is inscribed: 'This stone was renewed by William/Fairlie in the Guildie and/Barbara Petray his spouse in/Memory of their Deceast Father/Hendry Failie late servt. To the/Right Honble. Earl of panbridge/who died 24 August 1757 aged/75; also their Mother Elizabeth/Ramsay who died 24 March/1755 aged 59 & deceased/wifes Isobel Hay and Janet Crichton'.
