Scope and Content Detail of the gravestone of Margaret Webster, Monikie Parish Church and Burial Ground, Monikie, Angus This shows the top part of the gravestone with its pair of winged souls symbolising the soul ascending to Heaven after death. In the centre can be seen the deceased, a young girl in an ornate dress. She holds a palm frond, emblem of victory over death, and an open Bible, upon which is written (upside down as if Margaret is reading it) part of the Psalms. She is surrounded by further Biblical texts which symbolise her piety. Her Crown of Righteousness, a reward for leading a good life, hovers above her head. The figure of Margaret is shown in a high-neck embroidered dress and heeled shoes, presumably her best clothes, or those thought fashionable at the time. Many gravestones, like this example, record interesting contemporary costume details. This gravestone commemorates Margaret Webster, who died in 1744. It is inscribed: 'This stone was erected by William Webster/and Barbara Johnston his spouse in/Carlongie in memory their daughter/Margaret who departed this Life the/1st July 1744 going in the/6th year of her age./This stone was revised in the year/of our Lord one thousand seven/hundred and ninety eight by/Isobel Webster spouse to the/deceased Patrick Anderson/tenant in West Haven & daughter/of the said William Webster'.
